By the looks of the greenhouses full of poinsettias, Christmas must be on the way!  (If it's any consolation, they're still quite green...no red just yet!)  However we will be opening up in just a few short weeks with poinsettias, bulbs, greens, berries, and bunches of other goodies.  

And!  Please take note that we're trying something different this year and extending our December hours to include Thursday afternoon/ evenings.  We've been working on finding a way to be more accommodating with our open hours, so I hope this is a nice option for all of us.  You'll have to let us know what you think.

Well, we've recovered from last Saturday's Poinsettia Open House and are busy busy getting the greenhouse ready for some Starlight Shopping!  Hundreds of feet of lights have been hung (and more are waiting in the wings!), we've planted up even more of our favorite things for indoors and out, and we are just so excited to share it all with you!

We've all been both hustling and bustling in preparation of tomorrow's Annual Poinsettia Open House.  Even the green roof is in on the fun... can you spy the tiny tree?

Greens, Greens, Greens!

It's barely Thanksgiving and the greenhouse is already in full Christmas mode!  Red and white poinsettias (and everything in between!), bulbs, and the recent chill in the air are a steady reminder that December is drawing near.  

Another reminder of the season is the wreath-maker's annual appearance.  We've been in the habit of making our own wreathes over the years.  Anyone who was shopping yesterday could get an up-close look at our wreath process.  It's not overly sophisticated, but it is time consuming from start to finish: trimming down branches fresh cut from our own evergreens,  bundling them into tiny "bouquets" to be bound to the frame, brainstorming what to embellish them with next.  Berries, feathers, cotton, twigs, magnolia, dried fruit and flowers... few things are off limits!

The wreath-making will continue into December, along with fresh door swags and greens planters too.  So much to do, it's no wonder we begin before Thanksgiving!

Christmas is coming!  The seasons always seem to get ahead of us in the greenhouse.  We're so excited to open back up for the holiday season!  Greens, wreathes, berries, bulbs, and poinsettias... plus gorgeous new pottery, garden decor, and more that I'm probably forgetting about.  And don't forget to swing by for our annual Poinsettia Open House on December 6 from 8- 12 Noon!

We're busy bees getting ready for tomorrow's Poinsettia Open House! Today's rain hasn't slowed Marty down one bit- she spent beginning of the afternoon cutting off fresh winterberry.   Gorgeous!

"Luv" It!

It's always exciting to watch the poinsettias come into full color!  The past few weeks we've been enjoying the sea of green plants turning white, burgundy, red (of course!), and all sorts of variations in between. This season we've been especially enjoying the transformation of the "Luv U Pink" euphorbia hybrid.  Technically this isn't a poinsettia, it's a euphorbia hybrid (but still in the poinsettia family).  

You can see some slight differences from traditional poinsettias in its bract shape and coloring; it also had been bred to eliminate the little yellow centers, called cyathia, like you will see on traditional poinsettias.

The pictures barely do the electric pink color justice.  I don't know about you, but I think they're pretty irresistible!

Preparations

This week has been crammed full of Christmas as we've been getting the greenhouse ready for our retail hours next week!  Cutting twigs & berries, planting bulbs, gathering greens... and today we delved into wreath-making for the first time of the season.  Amid decorating the wreathes with gorgeous red winterberry and pinecones, we couldn't help but throw tradition to the wind and stuff a few full of peacock feathers.  So fun!

Treasure Hunting

We're taking turns "treasure hunting" in the woods this week.  During her (chilly!) adventure today, Miriam found quite a trophy!  Along with the mosses, bark, pinecones, sticks, bird nests, and other little treasures for our amaryllis terrariums, she brought back a branch with a perfect woodpecker hole.   

I wonder what we'll find tomorrow..!

A Winter Workshop:

DIY Amaryllis Terrariums

Cost: $40 per person

Join us for an exclusive morning in the greenhouse!  We're so excited to offer a small-scale workshop to create your own unique amaryllis terrarium, perfect for your own holiday decor or as a thoughtful gift. The greenhouse girls will be on hand to provide as much or as little assistance as you like.  Then participants are welcome to visit, browse or shop until 12:00 noon.

All supplies will be provided; including glassware, an amaryllis bulb, plus a bounty of natural embellishments.  Of course, participants are welcome to bring personal embellishments to use as well- let's be creative!  Light refreshments will also be available.

Space is limited and R.S.V.P.'s are required for planning purposes. Spots will be filled on a first come, first served basis.

Open House Day

To all who came out today for our annual Open House- thank you!  It's always so nice to see so many old and new friendly faces in the greenhouse.  We had a wonderful morning and hope that you enjoyed it too!

Tucked Away

Always a fun surprise:  praying mantis chrysalis in our yellow twig! (Actually called the "ootheca"- and yes, I did look it up just for this post!)  This season there seems to be a surplus of these little guys tucked away in our red and yellow twig.  So look twice when you're choosing your twigs and berries... there just might be a little bonus!

Deck the Halls!

We're now in full wreath-making mode!  If you stopped by this past week you may have noticed our assembly line in the back of the greenhouse.  We were kept busy cutting up greens, bunching them and then clamping them into wreath frames- a time consuming process.  The best part?  Choosing the perfect embellishments, of course!
