Time Flies

Whew- what happened to May?  Tomorrow, May 31 and Saturday, June 1 will be our last open days for retail this season.  Hope to see you then!

Presto Pesto!

We adore Pesto Perpetuo!  Its name almost sounds like part of a magician's act- "Pesto Perpetuo!"  And compared to traditional basil this one has trick up its sleeve.  Its flashy foliage is worthy of any herb garden and looks great in mixed containers, too!  But even better:  it will not flower!  And of course, that means that it will continue to grow without depending on you to pinch back those pesky flowers.  Magic!

Imperfectly Perfect

Every now and again we'll stumble onto a "fluke" in the greenhouses. Sometimes it's due to human error (right now, one of my favorite hanging basket combos is my favorite because it's a mistake!), and sometimes it's just out of our control.  Mother Nature is always up to something... can you see it?

Late Bloomers

It's not unusual for some plants to be overlooked the first several weeks of spring.  After the seemingly endless months of winter we crave color.  No wonder there's so much love for gerberas!  So the "late bloomers" are overlooked... and overlooked... and overlooked. And in many cases (certainly this one!), in time they will make themselves known!

Who doesn't love a good flower?  Begonia boliviensis 'Bonfire', or Bonfire begonias are hands-down one of our favorite late bloomers of the spring.  When they're ready, they erupt with color and simply are impossible to ignore:

Beautiful... and versatile, too!  Bonfires are just as happy in shade as they are in the sun.  Isn't it great when plants give you options? Mix in some Solanum and Evolvulus for a hot pot out by the pool, or try it with Streptocarpella and Illumination vinca vine under the porch.  So easy, and you can never go wrong with primary colors!

Give Back Those Pots!

Yup, you read that right- we want our pots back!  We'll gladly take those empty pots and trays off your hands.  There's just three simple guidelines:

- Bring empty pots, hanging baskets and trays that came from OUR greenhouse.  We are unable to keep items from other greenhouses and will have to send them back home with you.

- Drop them off during retail hours, please.  

- Keep your tags!  They're the perfect way to keep track of what you planted each year (and they make plant shopping the next year a breeze!).

Hosting the Spring Open House has become one of our favorite traditions over the years.  It began as a way to kick off our spring season and visit with our friends and neighbors and has evolved into a little bit more through the years!  There's a little more hustle and bustle these days, but the first Saturday in May is still the perfect time of year to enjoy the flowers, friends, and some of Aunt Cin's treats.

Lavender Phenomenal = Phenomenal Lavender

One of the (many) things that keeps us hooked on flowers is all the different plants.  Every season there seems to be endless amounts of new or improved plants- and it keeps us on our toes!  Last week I highlighted one of our favorite newbies, the Mighty 'Matos and made mention of another: a new perennial, Lavender Phenomenal.

Don't be fooled by this little guy!  It may be small and unpretentious now, but it wasn't named Lavender Phenomenal for nothing.  Take a look:

Pretty phenomenal!  The plant itself is full, even, and smothered in beautiful blooms.  And the best part?  It can back up its beauty with a whole lot of brawn.  It's being touted for its exceptional tolerance of heat and humidity and common diseases.  Also, Lavender Phenomenal stands out from the traditional Lavender Hidcote in that the foliage does not die back.  A "phenomenal" addition to any sunny spot! Could you ask for more?
